Review of Mars Attacks! (1996) by Scott W — 19 Mar 2011
Clearly inspired by Independence Day and his own Ed Wood, Tim Burton set out to make a terrible movie (with an incredible cast) and succeeded with flying colors. Hereâ(TM)s the thing, though. This sort of thing is only funny if itâ(TM)s done on accident.
This type of humor comes to us in a state of a release of our inner child. Not the sw...eet one, but the 13 year old bully that lives in all of us that likes to make fun of the crippled outcast. Making fun of a bad movie is one of the few times in life where itâ(TM)s totally okay to fuel your own cruel sensibilities.
Laughing at a movie like this would be kind of like laughing at a kid with down syndrome⦠in a wheelchair⦠in person⦠to his face. In other words, itâ(TM)s just not funny. (Just for the record, I remember liking Mars Attacks when I walked out of the theater when I was 16.
) Big Fish and Edward Scissorhands remain Burtonâ(TM)s greatest achievements, and I donâ(TM)t think thatâ(TM)s an accident. (Those two cover similar emotional territory) I hope that he has at least one more great film in him, though I donâ(TM)t have high hopes for his upcoming Frankenweenie.
