Review of Mars Attacks! (1996) by Curtis M — 10 Oct 2012
This homage to goofy 1950's sci-fi finds the Earth besieged by a hostile group of aliens. Conventional firearms don't work, but a scruffy outcast (Lukas Haas) eventually finds the answer in an unconventional source reminiscent of Day of the Triffids or The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms.
Director Tim Burton uses a lot of stunt casting in this intentionally cornball film; the players include Jack Nicholson, Natalie Portman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Martin Short, Pam Grier, Jim Brown, Glenn Close, Jack Black, Annette Bening, Michael J.
Fox, and even singer Tom Jones. Many will find this film to be a bit too over-the-top for their tastes, but connoisseurs of campy B-movies may find Mars Attacks! to be playful and fun.
