Review of Mars Attacks! (1996) by Troy F — 26 Jul 2013
Mars Attacks is both underrated and messy. For one thing, they got a hell of a cast here which add to the film, though arguably some star actors were just... well, there. That being said, the movie is meant to be a tribute to B-movie horror and sci-fi flicks, and does well at that.
It has the campy cheese factor, violence, and lots of silly nonsense. The visual effects date themselves today, but were rather well done for 1996. So special effects wise, the film delivered fantastically.
I think the film's biggest problem is that its not as humorous as it could've been. The film in many moments was just plain awkward, especially when you knew it was trying to be funny but didn't work.
It's often dark which works alright, but B movies are supposed to feel fun and silly. It's not that the film didn't try to go for that, there were some good funny parts after all, its just that its attempts didn't always work.
The film did hit, but could've hit way harder. Still, even if the film had its share of hits and misses, it undeniably a fun movie to watch and is good sci-fi/horror/comedy entertainment.
