Review of Mars Attacks! (1996) by Charles P — 29 Dec 2010
What is Mars Attacks? Is it a good movie? No. Is it filled with plot problems as far as the eye can see? Yes. Is it a game changer in the genre picture category? No. Is it filled with tons of characters who get little or no development other than just running around having fun? Definitely. And there lies the charm of this movie.
This movie is filled to the brim with top notch actors, all who seem just let go and have fun in their respective roles. Everybody is over the top doing their best to chew the scenery when given a chance. It really makes this movie fun to watch.
I can see why this movie is such a problem for many. Yes, the special effects are silly. But, that's the joke. It's as if the camp from the 50's and 60's Sci-fi movies, the ones that took themselves way too seriously, are with us in the contemporary world. The movie is just littered with your crazy pipe smoking scientist, the crazy patriotic fake president and his plastic wife, the, the gun toting Army general who wants to shoot first, the peace loving activist, and the grimy casino owner. It's all here.
If you can, just let your mind go, and sit back and enjoy this film. Remember, this isn't supposed to be ID4 or District 9. This is This Island Earth by way of zaniness. Hey, what else you can you expect from a movie based on a series of cards?
