Review of Mars Attacks! (1996) by Frisby 2 — 02 May 2011
A hilarious parody of 50s Sci-Fi movies, starring an amazing set of actors, most lovely of special effects, & most amazing of invading music. And to all of you Seltzer & Friedberg fans, this is a REAL PARODY (not none of that Vampire Sucks or Epic movie bullshit).
Now before you say "The actors were acting terrible in here & the film was so cheesy!!", CAN IT! That's the point! That's what Burton planned to do! He wanted this film to be an extremely cheesy parody! Despite the fact that the Special effects in here looks pretty good in here for it's own time.
Acting: It's bad, but that's the point. All of the actors put their best efforts to act so badly in here that it's funny.
Characters: The characters are all lovely & hilarious. How can you not love Jack Nicholson, & Glenn Close? Hey, even Danny DeVito was in here! As for the Martians, wow, talk about evil. They have got to be my favorite martians in looks to date.
Plot/Story: It's your typical 'Invaders from outer Space are taking over the world' cliche, but that's what made the film ridiculously hilarious, & the whole point of the parody.
Music/Score: Danny Elfman does it again. This guy captured the martian & extraterrestrial feel, & tends to add his signature chorus in it to make it darker, & better. I wonder if there is no movie out there that Danny can't capture the feel to it.
Special Effects: They were well done, despite the fact that Burton wanted them to look as fake & cheesy as possible. Now I will admit that the effects DID look cheesy in some scenes, but the weak spot in them was the slime after the martians had their brains blown open, it looked really fake for it's own time.
Final summation, it's one hilarious, cheesy parody movie. We need more martian invading movie like these.
