Review of Mars Attacks! (1996) by Matthew O — 09 May 2014
Why don't more people more people like this movie? Yes, it's bizarre, campy, and plenty of the time mean spirited, but there's some sort of insane charm to it that makes it really enjoyable.
The film feels like a deranged version of a drive in B-movie, and if you watch it in the right mood it's just as fun. There's plenty of funny moments in it, such as the destruction of Congress, the Martians' one weakness, and a finale with a smattering of woodland creatures, and the cast plays the characters with just the right amount of goofiness and seriousness to make the gags work.
Also what other alien invasion movie ends with a musical number? This is a classic Tim Burton movie that is seriously overlooked.
