Review of Marnie (1964) by Iain S — 07 Apr 2007
It naturally draws unfavourable comparisons with Vertigo (and really very few films can stand up to such a test) but that doesn't make this film any less valid in its own right. Connery's stalking of Hedren should unsettle us but so enigmatic is she that we become complicit in the voyuerism, craving the knowledge just as much as he does.
The climax treads a fine line between dizzying and unintentionally funny and, at times, nearly every character going comes off as pretty repellent but Hitchcock dangles the carrot of an explanation as only he can and leads us through the rough patches without complaint.
