Review of Marnie (1964) by Tom B — 21 Nov 2007
If you lok at this film in comparison with Hitchcock's other films it is disappointing, but if you watch it as just a film it isn't too bad. Ofcourse you must take into account the time of it's making, but in general not bad.
Sean Connery playing a rich, smart playboy, which he didn't do at all in the 60's or in his career for that matter. Tippi Hadren plays her complex character well. The characters were very hard to read.
Especially Sean Connery, it was difficult to tell whether you were supposed to like them or hate them, who was good who was bad. Maybe that was on purpose or maybe it was just bad acting. Hitchcock's use of colrs is excellent, and I don't mean when the whole screen went red I mean the subtle things that were yellow and red (the opening shot for example).
The end was very lack luster, especially for Hitchcock. The whole movie had been building up to some reason why Hadren was the way she was, and the reason was not very surprising. Overall medicore film.
If you're in the mood for HItchcock go rent Vertigo, Psycho, The Man Who KNew Too Much, or a multitude of better Hitchcock's.
