Review of Marnie (1964) by Tibor B — 14 Aug 2009
Not a standard Hitchcock thriller as such, rather one of the most perverse romances ever filmed. Marnie (Hedren), a compulsive liar and thief catches the eye of wealthy Mark Rutland (Connery) who employs her in his office despite knowing her criminal tendencies.
Connery is perhaps the more intiguing character, despite Marnie being the focus - marnie's deep rooted issues being clearly explored while Mark's possessiveness and emotionally brutal tactics remain mysterious.
Hitchcocks techniques do look a bit dated, especially the rear projection but for the most part, his masterful direction heightens the intensity of this twisted tale.
