Review of Marmaduke (2010) by Ha H — 17 Sep 2010
In the past decade, studios have been releasing talking-animal films. Warner Bros. had "Cats & Dogs", Disney had "Underdog", and Paramount had "Charlotte's Web". 20th Century Fox, who had major success with the "Alvin & The Chipmunks" movies, tries to start off another movie franchise as it adapts the comic book cartoon "Marmaduke".
Despite studios being successful in the past amazingly with the genre, "Marmaduke" won't keep that streak alive. It comes from an unpopular background and not too many families have been raving about it. Altogether, the film was great, if there was one problem, Marmaduke himself. He wouldn't stop pulling one crude joke after another (like his voice actor Owen Wilson). Plus, when it was a good scene at a few points, he would narrate it, giving not much time for the actual characters to speak.
Despite the crude jokes, there is actually a few funny parts in the film. When the cat is used as bait for a trick that goes wrong, that is funny. But, the voice acting is a bit lackluster compared to other talking animal films, and the dancing ending you can tell it is more fake than real, and I don't see this film performing well with audiences.
If you have liked talking-animal films before, this one may satisfy some, but maybe not the "Cats & Dogs" fans, as the sequel "Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore" has done better business at the box office.
Age group: Kids ages 6 and up (5 and under may need parental supervision due to its' PG rating).
Three stars out of five.
