I didn't know much about this movie prior to seeing it, but it's basically about marley's life from puppy onward. he does some fairly outlandish things and causes all sorts of problems for the grogans on a day-to-day basis, when they're on vacation, when they have a family, when they're out in public.
but he is part of the family, and we get to see the ups and the downs like in any family. one can see the frustration that jenny and john have with marley and yet they won't give up on him. in return, there are many joyful moments.
the movie is not only about the relationship between jenny and john and how marley affects that relationship, but it is also about the relationship marley has with the grogans. we don't see it from marley's perspective, but clearly without marley, there's no movie here.
