Review of Marley & Me (2008) by Esteban G — 28 Dec 2011
This movie had me fooled; I expected to see a comedy featuring Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston but instead the first half an hour was comedy and then the movie slowly turned to a family drama which at some points felt pretty awkward in a movie of this genre.
The beginning was great and the movie seemed to be heading to towards the right direction but then the movie seemed to take a more dramatic direction and focused on the relationship between the two main characters and the trouble they had adapting to the children.
The movie seemed to work when it focused on Marley, the Labrador, but when it changes the focus to the discussions and family issues it seems to fall out of place and not work very well. At other moments it seemed to try too hard at evoking emotions out of the viewer and there were quite a few people who left the cinema with tears in their eyes.
The story is good and funny at several points especially in the first half hour but at other moments it seems to drag a bit. I loved the scene where they narrated in fast forward what was going on each day to evoke the passing of time.
Overall the movie is ok, a must see if you are a dog lover.
