Review of Marley & Me (2008) by Brendan N — 01 May 2012
Finally got around to seeing this often recommended film. It's based on a book I haven't read, so I'm judging this solely as a film. Did I enjoy it? Yes, though it is very simple and obvious for 3/4 of the film.
It's basically a Marmaduke strip spread out into a feature film. I have to say that for much of the film I found the dog angle less interesting than John's struggles at home and the office. The Marley bits were just too predictable and repetitive.
But the movie changes of course as Marley gets older and we see more depth to his personality. If you are into having your heartstrings pulled, then yanked, then shredded, this is the film for you. If not, feel free to skip as the rest of the film is pretty so-so.
The best pet movie ever? No, but it'll do, I guess. Bring tissues.
