Review of Marley & Me (2008) by Pia K — 23 Feb 2015
This film is really odd. On one hand you have a sickly-sweet kind of Beethoven story about a lovable yet mischievous dog, which is basically classic family fare. Then you have other scenes like the one involving a miscarriage and a relatively gory scene in which a neighbour has just been stabbed outside her house.
Really traumatic stuff. It just seemed quite misjudged. Having said that, despite the schmaltz, the ending is quite affecting. Although the scene with Owen Wilson describing Marley as 'no normal dog' absolutely smashes the cheese-o-meter.
I couldn't help but laugh. Okay I cant decide whether I love or hated Marley and Me. 3 stars it is then.
