Review of Maria Full of Grace (2004) by Elysa D — 02 Dec 2007
With directness and simplicity, this film combines the struggle of becoming an independent adult, patriarchal dominance over vulnerable women and the real path many women find themselves on as drug traffickers.
It is an emotionally tortuous story of a feisty Columbian 17 year-old village girl who wants to live beyond the expectations prescribed for her - working in the local rose factory - and living among women and men who fail to meet her expectations.
In a bid to escape, soon after finding out she's pregnant, she accepts an offer from an out-of-town hustler to become a mule - using her body to traffic heroin to New York. Her journey as a mule, from swallowing the pellets to being lost and on the run in New York is tense, well-paced and brought together without sentimentality by the stoic performance of the stunning Moreno who plays Maria.
