Review of Maria Full of Grace (2004) by Marianne S — 02 Feb 2009
This is a very unusual film that deals with an unusual theme. Maria, the protagonist, is a 17 year old from Columbia who, in the search for money, hires herself out as a "mule" to the US. A "mule" is someone who transports drugs by ingesting them so they are not detectable.
In many ways, Maria was a very sympathetic character that evoked a sense of sympathy. However, in many ways, Maria was also a very bratty teenager who showed little sympathy towards others around her who were suffering. She was emotionally inconsistent, normal for any teenager, but made her a bit difficult to completely care for.
