Review of Maria Full of Grace (2004) by Jose M — 23 Mar 2009
With this film, Marston does a terrific job of giving insight into the exploitation of poor, underprivileged women by the drug trade. It seems like the source material has been done a million different ways by now, but never from the perspective of a "mule" (a woman who is fed many pellets of cocaine for transport out of Colombia). Catalina Sandino Moreno's performance is the crux of the film; without it, I cannot see this film being as affecting as it is. Her work in the film is definitely Oscar-caliber, and I was even more surprised to learn that this was her debut performance. This film is a remarkably poignant and tragic look at the intricacies of the drug trade, as seen from the pawns who are thrust into the midst of it through sheer misfortune. It is definitely well worth watching.
