Review of Maria Full of Grace (2004) by Ted P — 17 Aug 2009
A cliche film about a girl from a poor village in a poor country who gets in over her head in search of money and an escape from the grueling life when she is thrown into one of the most dangerous and despicable of worlds: the drug world. She agrees to traffic cocaine from Colombia to NY via her stomach and realizes the true danger of what she is doing throughout the film, just as we do.
Such stories have been done to death but who cares? If its done right, its done right and Maria Full of Grace is certainly done right. All the actors act out their roles well and feel Maria's tension on the plane. Furthermore the movie is full of interesting symbolism, from Maria's job at the beginning (working at a flower plantation that most likely exports abroad) to the constant Christian references apparent in the very name of the film and throughout, immigrations and the drug trade. The movie speaks a lot about the world it portrays.
Definitely something I enjoyed.
