Review of Maria Full of Grace (2004) by Elliott F — 26 Jul 2012
Joshua Marston's Maria Full of Grace is a superb film, gritty but natural, bleak but not without hope. It tells the story of Maria Alvarez (Catalina Sandino Moreno), a seventeen-year-old girl who turns to becoming a drug mule to make some money for her family.
It's amazingly direct for a film of this nature, avoiding the easy way out, and without pulling strings for emotional response. As Maria, Sandino Moreno gives a stunning performance, glowing with naturalism and rawness.
She is something of a revelation. The film as a whole is just as great. One of the best of 2004.
