Review of Maria Full of Grace (2004) by Steve S — 18 Apr 2010
***1/2 (out of four).
The Grand Prize winner at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, the film also garnered a Best Actress Oscar nomination for its star, Catalina Sandino Moreno. It is excellent piece of story telling with heartbreaking performances.
Maria lives a routine life in Bogota, Columbia, but her future looks bleak when she loses her job. Then she meets an intriguing young man who promises her money if she will swallow heroin packets and then transport them to the United States.
The story is not uncommon amongst desperate young women. This indie is unique and heartfelt. Moreno delivers a role of a lifetime performance.
