Review of Marguerite (2015) by Kevin A — 01 Apr 2016
Ars Gratis Artis, Marguerite is a sublime delight from France about an opera obsessed matron who dotes on the musical society near her chateau. Despite her devotion and endless practice her singing is atrocious.
When she sings it sounds like someone stepped on a cat. But Marguerite is so endearing and genuine that it's such fun. There are laugh out loud moments, scenes with vocals that make you cringe and terrific side players.
Most enjoyable is Michel Fau as a washed up opera tenor with secret sexual predilctions that are used to draft him to coach Marguerite for her debut before fine society in a recital she has funded and planned at a major venue.
This film has a beating heart and the performance by Catherine Ferot as Madame Dumont is a treasure. This should get a nomination in the best foreign film category for 2016.
