Review of Margot at the Wedding (2007) by Matt D — 05 Sep 2008
Noah Baumbach doesn't recreate the magic of The Squid and the Whale in his second movie. Thats thanks mainly to the main character of Margot even though Nicole Kidman is a good actress she doesn't pull of making this extremley unlikeable woman at all likeable although I'm sure thats what the director intended.
Jack Black and Jennifer Jason Leigh are perfectly fine but again the characterisation does them no favours. The only likeable character is Margot's son Claude who's adolescent antics are what keep you watching for some of the film.
There are some good set pieces such as the scene with the tree climbing and later the tree felling. But overall the film didn't know what to do with itself and the ending was a bit of nothing.
