Review of Margot at the Wedding (2007) by Ola G — 11 Jan 2009
Margot (Nicole Kidman), a wellknown writer and her teen son, Claude, travels from Manhattan to her familys Long Island home.
To participate in her sister Paulines (Jennifer Jason Leigh) wedding. Margot is a very unstable person with a borderline personality disorder and everyone around her suffers from it. Paulines to be husband Malcolm (Jack Black) is an unemployed musician that dabbles with some sort of writing and painting. Margot dislikes him and vice versa. Plus Malcolm has some other issues to deal with.. Alongside her obvious mental issues, Margot has as well marital problems and a lover nearby. She manages to plant seeds of doubt everywhere and soon enough everything is caving in for Margot, Pauline and Malcolm.
Well, I must say first of all that I think the cast is giving solid performances in this drama, that is why I give it a three. I am a bit tired of watching Nicole Kidmans strange apperance though, but she is doing a good job as Margot. Nevertheless, my main issue here is that EVERYBODY, and I mean EVERYBODY is dysfunctional in "Margot At The Wedding". It becomes almost unbearable how fucked up everyone is in Noah Baumbachs world. How fucked up is he himself one can wonder?
