Review of Margot at the Wedding (2007) by Dan B — 15 Jan 2009
Starts well, but sags terribly in the second half and suffers from a creeping sense of "Yeah... and who cares?" as it progresses. There's something slightly eerie about Nicole Kidman - there's nothing wrong with her performance (indeed there's a lot right with it), but watching her is a bit like marveling at a remarkably lifelike android.
Jack Black (entertaining though he is) is terribly miscast and looks like he's wandered in from another movie. Overall, it reminded me of a lot of recent French cinema (and not the good kind; rather, the kind in which Isabelle Huppert wanders around an elegant apartment occasionally playing the piano.
) If the star rating seems at odds with the comments, it's because the first 45 minutes or so are really rather good and also because of Jennifer Jason Leigh's typically spot on performance. And, you know, points for effort and all that.
After you've watched it, you'll at least have something to talk about.
