Review of Margot at the Wedding (2007) by Kristin R — 14 Apr 2012
Baumbach has a tone that you can't get away from, and in this movie it's really pronounced, so if you don't like it, the whole thing will really irritate you. It did me, at times, but I also admired the specificity of the writing, the way seemingly throwaway lines were later resurrected, the merciless eye the film had on Margot, and the consistency of the humor (not always funny, but always the same).
Like it or not, Baumbach has a vision, and it's his own. I think, too, I like that the movie is willing to mention Alice Munro. I don't know. I was going to say, "Noah Baumbach must have had a fucked up family," but then I didn't want to be one of those people who can't grasp that fiction is a product of the imagination, etc.
Then I looked at Roger Ebert's review, and the first thing he said was, "I wonder if his family knew Noah Baumbach was taking notes." So.
