Review of Margot at the Wedding (2007) by Emily B — 10 Jul 2009
This was one of those films that left me with a really bad feeling in my stomach. I don't know why...maybe it was the really pathetic and unlikeable characters, the nastiness of Margot and her uncomfortable relationship with her son. Maybe it was the fact that Margot reminds me of my own nasty, selfish mother so I didn't need to see it on screen? Whatever it was I don't know why I continued watching but I did.
I read an interview with Jessica Jason Leigh where she described her character's love for her fiance as:
"...He makes her laugh, and his fits of rage aren't frightening to her. She grew up with rage that was terrifying and really dangerous, so the fact that he can rage and she can laugh about it is enormous for her. And he loves her. He's not mysterious. She knows what she's looking at when she looks at him. She knows who he is.".
I connected with that so much that I read that quote over and over and I felt that I HAD to see this film. I may connect with the quote but that is not how I saw her realtionship with her fiance. Jack Black's character was a pathetic little man who treated her appallingly.
To sum this film up in one word I would say: uncomfortable.
