Review of Margot at the Wedding (2007) by Phil P — 07 Jul 2008

"Margot at the Wedding" is a surprisingly engaging comedy/drama from Noah Baumbach with Nicole Kidman in the center saying whatever she wants and creating all sorts of conflicts while engaging the full spectrum of the complicated relationships that exist between all the characters.

It's a surprise at how much is packed into this hour and a half as Baumbach makes great strides in this movie that I found more entertaining than "The Squid and the Whale". It's another quiet movie that I love to get into and I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did.

Despite his tendency to not hold back when dealing with sexual issues and showing audiences what is normally outside the realm of taste and crafting over-the-top and unusual characters, this movie felt real and was easy to tap into.

Baumbach as always pulls a little from life, much as Margot does in her writings, and it shows in how he cares for these characters and the wisdom and observations that each of them carry. Much more can be said about this movie, but I will just say that I will recommend to all of those who loved "The Squid and the Whale" and those who love a good indie film.
