Review of Margin Call (2011) by Hanna H — 26 Feb 2012
Given the subject matter I did not think that I would like this movie, but man was I wrong. Director J.C. Chandor manage to make a movie about what I consider to be a very boring subject incredibly entertaining. The story is about a firm dealing with possible catostrophic problems with their finances. You get to see the problem from the eyes of a junior analyst all the way to the eyes of the CEO. This gives the film a great range of perspectives which I enjoyed.
All of the stars give good performances here, although I though Simon Baker and Demi Moore were a little...rigid. The three stars that stand out the most in this film are Paul Bettany, Kevin Spacey and Jeremy Irons. They deliver some really good scenes here. I specially loved Jeremy Irons performance as the assertive, if not somewhat menacing, CEO.
I was surprised how engaging the actual diologue was, Speciallt when it came down to some of the scenes that consisted of most of the cast sitting in a conference room. The tension in those scenes are palpable and converts this drama into a thriller of sorts. It got to the point where I was actually excited to see how some of the characters would react to the latest plot points and the actions of others.
Good Fucking Movie!
