Review of Margin Call (2011) by Neill C — 04 Apr 2012
Should be compulsory viewing for politicians, economists and free-market enthusiasts.
I spent 30 years in this industry and Margin Call is the only movie that's an accurate portayal of the people and their motivations. In fact, its characters are a lot nicer than most investment bankers or CEOs or sales traders.
Movies like Wall Street or Inside Job split their characters into goodies and baddies. Sure this is for dramatic reasons, but in investment banking there are no goodies, only baddies. Some of the players still suffer occasional twinges of human feeling, but many never had any to start with.
When you realise what sort of people this industry attracts, you begin to understand why they keep making money and the 99% keep getting stiffed.
Why am I telling you this? Because I'm like Will Emerson - I got top price for selling my soul.
