Review of Margin Call (2011) by Thomas V — 16 Jul 2012
Yet another crisis movie that promised to be entertaining and captivating, but didn't turn out so well in my opinion. J.C. Chandor tries to paint a picture of how the never-ending hierarchy at a major investment bank reacts to an unprecedented issue, but ultimately the picture is empty.
Most of the actors are doing a good job at portraying the characters, however the screenplay seems to be written to enact every clichà (C) possible in the banking industry, and early enough, I found myself not caring for what would happen to the characters and the outcome of their dilemmas.
What I felt left with at the end of the movie was the blurry and abstrait portrayal of top financial executives that could, and should in my opinion, have gotten much more into their minds rather than a rough sketching of their all-alike personnalities.
To conclude, Margin Call is disappointing not because of the performances and the direction that were very good, but because it is such an under achieved movie with regards to the available material to draw from.
