Review of Margaret (2011) by Edward C — 12 Dec 2012
Not just a great film, it is masterpiece. Perhaps I haven't seen enough films, but I can't think of another movie that that so deftly, eloquently tackles the difficulty of finding the way toward doing the right thing in a world of conflicting truths.
And for a film with such deep moral and ethical concerns it does so without succumbing to moralizing or the temptation to offer solutions. In terms of filmmaking, Lonergan does does so many things well.
He gets terrific performances from actors, even those whose talent is only fair. Especially Paquin, who is extraordinary in Margaret. Based on the two films they've made together I'd also say that nobody gets a better performance out of Mark Ruffalo.
The dialogue is so sharp, honest, and realistic it has a documentary-like truthfulness. It is melancholy, and harsh, and complex. It's not a film I'll ever forget.
