Review of Marebito (2004) by First L — 23 Mar 2006
From the Japanese director of Ju-on comes the movie Marebito. As a fan of Ju-on, I was looking forward to this for a while and it was just released a few weeks ago (one copy at Nutbuster). The movie starts out building suspense pretty well which ends about fifteen minutes into it when he finds a cheesy subterranean cavern that looks like it's outside.
This is also where we see inconsistencies begin as well. Noone there but a girl who's chained up. He takes her back to find out she's not human. The rest is good in it's concepts, but there is a good deal of cheese and low budget shooting/acting that ruins things along the way, but it delivers a pretty good ending, albeit confusing for a while.
Having Western paradigms is a handicap when watching these films. Overall it's a decent rental for Asian horror fans, but not up to Ju-on, except it's budget is just as low.
