Review of Marebito (2004) by Paul N — 03 Apr 2007
Marebito is an interesting film. Takashi Shimizu filmed it in the 8 days in between the Japanese Grudge 2 finished and the American Grudge began filming. What we get is a very raw but very intriguing film about subterrannean vampires.
When Shinya Tsukamoto's character ventures deep into the Tokyo underground to discover the sense of terror he saw in a man's eyes, he finds a woman chained up and naked. He takes her home but can't seem to feed her anything. One day he returns with a cut on his finger and she sets to sucking the blood. Shinya sprials further into himself as he attempts to humanize this girl while still supplying her with enough blood to survive.
Marebito is a raw movie, but is often stylish. The acting is great (as to be expected of Shinya) and the story is very unique. The plot even has a few twists and turns to keep you wondering.
Fans of Shimizu's work will probably get a kick out of seeing this as it is so far gone from what he has done before. This is Shimizu proving he is more than just The Grudge.
Watch it, or have your blood viciously sucked by the underground vampires. Seriously.
