Review of Marebito (2004) by Andrew R — 21 Jul 2007
I have to take a shower and pack so this will be fast.
Hard Candy had an interesting premise, but was completely implausible. There were several sequences in which this supposedly "fit" and "intelligent" 32-year-old man could have outwitted or simply overpowered the 14 year old i'm-so-cool girl who was holding him hostage. A bit of overacting on her part, and I'm sorry, no 14 year old girl on the face of the earth is that smart, cold, resourceful, opaque, and calculated all at once. Not to mention the ending was ridiculous because there were many more outlets for our male protagonist than the one the movie wanted to force. Plenty of interesting dialogue and sequences, but the film just isn't as smart as it wants to be.
Marebito is a horrible movie. Unscary, plotless, witless, lacking direction and logic at all times, the only thing that brings this to a 2 is a couple of mildly interesting ideas, most of which are soon trashed after their introduction. The acting is horrible, the direction is overdramatic and laughable, and the dialogue is about as mindless and confusing as a what a 6th grade angsty, twisted, horny, rejected kid might write. I never thought I'd say this, but "The Grudge" was better.
