Review of Marebito (2004) by Joshua H — 30 Jun 2008
Seriously in my top ten favorite movies. That synopsis is s***, that doesn't even make sense in relation to the film. It's gritty and real and so so visceral. God, I love this movie. It never gets the respect it deserves!!!
I watched this movie recently, this viewing being number 27, and I realized several things about Marebito. The first, this movie goes far above and far beyond expectations from box art, disc art, summary, and trailers. Secondly, for a relatively short run time of an hour and a half, it feels like a much longer film, and it's very consistent quality. I also realized that the few "shock" moments were really not designed to be the typical "guy popping out" type of thrill, but rather, an intellectual attempt to bring the viewer closer to the main character, by keeping the viewer on their toes just a bit, getting a fraction of that uncertainty and surprise that the main character is experiencing, and imo, I definitely would have to conclude that they were effective.
