Review of March of the Penguins (2005) by Hannibal O — 04 Sep 2008
For some reason, people, especially kids and moms, go apeshit over penguins. I don't know why penguins rather than some other cute animal, but they do, which explains the surprise box office success of this film.
The doc won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2004 and after seeing it recently, my only conclusion is that it must have been a shitty year for documentaries for this to have won. Now don't get me wrong.
This is a beautifully shot and at times moving film with a nice score from Alex Wurman to boot. However, this did not pull me in the way that I expected it would or should have. It was like watching a well done Discovery Channel documentary on penguins.
One thing that was very good about the film was the decision to have Morgan Freeman narrate. What a commanding and awesome voice. If I could sound like him, I'd be signing up for every single commercial I could get my hands on and be making a shitload of cash.
Overall this is a good film and for any fuckhead out there who doesn't give a shit about global warming or the effects of the melting ice caps should check this movie out and realize that how we fuck up our world will adversely affect these animals.
