Review of March of the Penguins (2005) by Rebecca H — 12 Nov 2008
Animal documentaries usually do two things - they home in on a particular animal, give it a name and follow it for a while, so we learn its personality and care about it - and they tell us facts about the animals and we learn. This film does neither of those, so it has no worth as an animal documentary.
Instead it has a bizarre narration by Morgan Freeman, who tells us nothing of value, speaks in riddles and is generally annoying. The music is out of place and distracting. The direction is frightful, often focusing on half a foot or a shoulder of a penguin, as if the cameraman is unaware it has moved out of the frame, or something is simply blocking the view. There is no real plot or characters and yet this is a FILM so how can it provide less than a normal documentary? The one thing that March Of The Penguins provides more than anything else is lots and lots of death.
Badly made, boring and depressing, the only thing going for this random tale of how penguins should really just give up, is cute fluffy babies.
