Review of March of the Penguins (2005) by Kai82 — 23 Jul 2022
A nature documentary that is well made but strangely started a controversy about political and social issues. I do not focus on the controversy and rate it just as movie. The documentation is about the emperor penguins and their life in the harsh Antarctic environments.
It is a hard struggle to keep the egg intact in the bitter cold and raise the young as the open water feeding grounds are far away from the breeding area. I must point out that I watched the German version which has awkward moments when they insert human voices for the penguins.
It felt really strange and it is overlooked for the awkwardness or mentioned as negative. It took anyone I knew out of the immersion and most of them thought WTF or why was this inserted. The rest of the movie is a strong and immersive documentary.
The visuals and pictures are amazing and deliver an atmosphere we enjoyed in the cinema. I would recommend watching it on the big screen as it works better there (not meant as critique). A documentary should be like this giving you a strong presentation and keeping you interested in the topic.
I was invested in the topic, penguins and whole movie. To be honest I just visited the cinema with a friend who recommend the movie while being really skeptic about it. It unexpectedly won me over except the awkward moments mentioned above.
Overall this is a documentary I enjoyed and would be in the 9-10/10 territory. However the awkward insert of human voices or decision to use it (if not added) took it down to a 7 for the immersion break.
But it was so good I resent this decrease to give perspective.
