Review of March of the Penguins (2005) by Zaidsheikh94 S — 12 Sep 2009
This wildlife documentary has stunning photography, including some beautiful and intimate closeups of penguins protecting their eggs and later their chicks. It's a well-told "year in the life" of the reproductive habits of these curious, flightless birds.
It's not all sweetness, however, as the harsh Antarctic environment takes its toll on parents and offspring alike. Be warned that there are some stark images of chicks that did not survive. Morgan Freeman's narration is suitably awed by the subject matter.
I do think the script goes a bit too far in ascribing human emotions such as joy and grief to the penguins. There are powerful instincts at work here, but I'd want to know a bit more before saying there are also powerful emotions in play.
