Review of March of the Penguins (2005) by Blackity B — 15 Dec 2009
A movie about penguins narrated by Morgan Freeman? Almost impossible for me not to love, and yet I can only give it a 6-6.5 rating at best.
The good thing is that visually, the movie definitely succeeds, it deserves all its praise in that department, and I can listen to Morgan Freeman till the end of time and not get bored.
The bad thing, however, is that it seems to have its ideologies a bit out of balance. On one hand, it creates this cutesy fabrication of penguins experiencing what is almost depicted as human love, but then on the other it shows the piles of bodies and unending grimness of the hardships they face. I understand the "truthful balance" they were going for, but it just didn't mix well. It's akin to making an establishing shot of the beautiful night sky and children's laughter or whatever, then panning down to a trench field of decomposing World War I soldiers. It just doesn't blend well, and both the "cutesy love" and "harsh reality" seem tacked on at the end.
