Review of Marathon Man (1976) by Sandy J — 31 Aug 2009
Holy crap what an amazing film. I haven't seen such a great thriller since the good old days of Hitchcock. It's got a great cast (Hoffman is amazing and Scheider is so classy) and put them into such an interesting story involving future Nazis, diamond chasing, and government conspiracies.
What works so well in this film is that Hoffman is just a normal graduate student who is an avid runner and is thrown into a situation beyond anything a normal person should ever deal with. Laurence Olivier is so evil as Szell the Nazi dentist and the torture scenes brings new reason to fear a dentist and his drills.
It's very intense and has the perfect level of violence, paranoia and twists and turns the classic thriller needs. I didn't know who was good or who was evil and the film only ever lets you know exactly what you should at any given time without insulting your intelligence.
Such a great film they don't make em like this anymore.
