Review of Marathon Man (1976) by Andrew D — 19 Feb 2011
One of the most fascinating things about film in the seventies is the fact that movies like this were considered blockbusters. It's a strange, paranoid thriller with enough twists to keep you on your feet and the performances to sell every ridiculous moment.
The two giants here are, of course, Hoffman and Olivier, who, as the pursued and the pursuer respectively, mesh two divergent styles of acting into a predator/prey relationship that cannot be forgotten. Of course, Olivier is responsible for delivering the quote that set this film's place in history, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as impacting if Hoffman hadn't seemed so genuinely terrified. The same goes for the writing and directing; anyone not seeing this film is denying themselves a fantastic triumph of creativity in film.
