Review of Marathon Man (1976) by Al M — 13 May 2011
A stylish, 70s conspiracy thriller with an awesome cast that features Dustin Hoffman, Laurence Olivier, and Roy Scheider. A marathon-running, brilliant history graduate student whose father was a victim of McCarthyism discovers that his brother is top secret agent who was on the trail of Nazi scientists and their hidden diamond caches that were stolen from Jewish concentration camp victims.
Marathon Man is well made, at times disturbing film that ultimately suffers from being too long and slow. Still, its Nazi torture scenes are iconic, and it ranks alongside The Parallax View, All the President's Men, Three Days of the Condor, etc.
as a classic of 70s paranoid cinema.
