Review of Mara (2018) by Mike W — 07 Sep 2018
UNLIKE THE 'CRITICS'" REVIEWS WOULD HAVE YOU BELIEVE, MARA IS AT LEAST AS SCARY, PRESENTING UNFORESEEN TWISTS & TURNS, AND RATHER REMARKABLY GOOD and, for horror films put together anytime after, say, 1980, a refreshingly different core premise. What is certainly lacking are intelligent, above grade-school level dialogue and scripted behaviour. effects are wanting, but no more so than the bulk of similar films today, which are far below those found in the rare exception, like the neeson & zeta-jones 1999 the haunting, or the much earlier 1981 ghost story. doubtless--and I would actually wager money on it--those 'critics' who wholly ripped mara to shreds simply can't swallow, or even grasp, the underlying premise, that there are truly such things as demons and actual evil, as opposed to aliens (the 'modern' form evil spirit or (lower case) devil--can't utilise that distinction here, as it seems that Rt has tossed all text formatting.
Anyway, you should ignore the 'trending' appraisals you'll find below, and give it a go. It's certainly lacking in polish--looks more like a hodgepodge of bad 'takes,' than the finished product--and really effective dialogue, but as an exception to the alien/ubiquitous mentally deranged/pervasive dystopian d-films now churned out by follywood, and offering, what for today is, a fresh basis for the sinister, it really delivers!
