Review of Maps to the Stars (2014) by Steve W — 02 Nov 2014
Cronenberg's newest movie is filled with daytime sunniness and cheer, but lurking under the sheets is a scathing and dark satire of Hollywood in its subtle glory. Exploring the lives of a successful Hollywood family and a fading actress, the movie captures a comedic and over-the-top portrayal of the dirty business in Tinseltown.
Julianne Moore is great in this, and is only usurped by scene stealer Sarah Gadon, who is able to chew scenery better than Mr. Bagina. Everyone else backs them up fine, but the teenage son is pretty stiff.
A wacky and surreal mix of dark emotions and sinister intent, Map to the Stars is Cronenberg's middle finger to the overexposed types in Hollywood and their vapid self centered selves.
