Review of Maps to the Stars (2014) by Jon P — 04 Nov 2014
Mommie Dearest meets Mulholland Drive in David Cronenberg's twisted Tinseltown thriller.
Julianne Moore is astonishing as tortured actress, Havana Segrand, steaming with all the desperation of a modern day Norma Desmond. But the nods, parallels and poisonous pastiches don't stop there: the whole film is an amalgamation of pitch black nostalgia and venomous assault on common conceptions of celebrity culture. Remorseless, perverse and with the gut punch of a good Greek Tragedy to boot, Cronenberg's chiller is bittersweet bliss.
