Review of Maps to the Stars (2014) by Michael L — 08 Dec 2014
Devoid of his moody unusual intensity, David Cronenberg's latest feature MAPS TO THE STARS is quite simply put, one very bad movie. Actually it's quite dreadful. There were times when I wondered if in fact what I was watching was actually finished which would have been more interesting than the jumble of mumbo jumbo I was left watching.
This meditation, examination, satire, oh whatever, of Hollywood does do an excellent job of not being a navel gazing film. MAPS TO THE STARS uses Hollywood as a metaphor of our misguided contemporary society.
Drug use, rehab, an "empty" gun, self-help gurus,... you've seen it all before and far better. Julianne Moore on the other hand is pitch perfect, actually quite amazing in a role of very neurotic self-centered monster of an actress.
But Moore is commenting on her personification as much as acting. And her work is quite brilliant. I wish the same could be said of the film as a whole.
