Review of Maps to the Stars (2014) by Mark H — 09 Mar 2015
Half star out of 5. One of the worst films I've seen in a long time and a true waste of all the talent involved. Starting with a really bad script, that tries to be a satire of Hollywood, but is not at all funny or insightful. The film quickly devolves into a snake pit of psychotic characters and behavior, with no redeeming value.
Yes, if you find TMZ and the Kardashians fascinating, you might enjoy this shallow parody, but from world class filmmaker Cronenberg and freshly Oscared Julianne Moore, you expect a much better two hours than this mess delivers.
Only the technical work of the Production Design, Cinematography and Editing make the film worth watching because they're all professionally done. At the center is a film I thought seriously about walking out on and when over, probably should have.
The two young actors, Mia Wasikowska and Evan Bird, are very good as the central brother and sister, but where their story leads is still repellent. Julianne Moore is lucky this wasn't released before Oscar voting because it might have cost her the award. It's not that she's so terrible, it's just her shallow bitch of a whiny, self serving character is so unlikeable, along with everyone else. Don't waste your time.
