Review of Maps to the Stars (2014) by Richard D — 31 Oct 2017
Director, David Cronenberg (The Fly, A History of Violence) directs his new addition to his Filmography. Maps to the Stars, is a very dark satire/comedy on the dark side of Hollywood, and how Hollywood operates behind the scenes.
This movie is written by controversial Hollywood novelist, Bruce Wagner. In this film we have, Julianne Moore, a failing actress who wants to become relevant in Hollywood again, by starring in a remake of a movie that her mother was in, playing the part of her mother.
We are also introduced to, John Cusack, a self-help author/T.V. personality, who helped Moore's character to deal with her past, and preparing her for the role. On the other hand, Cusack's wife is helping their teenage star son, Benjie played by Evan Bird.
He is a very vulgar rich snob who gets what he wants. When Cusack's estranged daughter comes into the picture after leaving a mental institute, she tries to make amends to her family after wronging them in the past.
She gets a job with Moore's character, somehow mysteriously intertwining all of their lives together. This film is brilliantly shot by, Peter Suschitzky, and is wonderfully directed by, David Cronenberg.
This film has a very dark and sinister take on Hollywood, while parodying it, but also bring accurate at the same time. This film has a very weird, bizarre atmosphere that must require more than one viewing, to fully understand it.
Acting in the film is very great, and is to be cherished. Overall, Maps to the Stars is a film not to be forgotten.
