Competent retelling of Li Cunxin's autobiography. The script glosses over the most interesting part of the book (the childhood part of the story), surmising perhaps correctly that the defection story is more cinematic.
All the cast do well, and the movie entertains, albeit without Li's insights into the turbulent time covered by the early part of his book.
